Is Your Birmingham Business Ready for the PSTN Switch-Off?

The UK’s copper telephone network — the PSTN — is being switched off permanently by December 2027. Every business currently running phone lines, broadband, or any service over the old copper network will need to migrate before that date. Businesses that leave this too late face service disruption, rushed migrations, and the risk of being left without phone or internet connectivity.

Sentinel SecureTech provides business broadband and FTTP fibre services for businesses across Birmingham, Solihull, Wolverhampton, Coventry, and the wider West Midlands. We handle the full migration — broadband upgrade, voice service transition, and any associated hardware changes — as a single managed project. If you also need a dedicated leased line for higher-demand requirements, or backup connectivity to protect your primary connection, we supply and manage both.

Business Broadband vs FTTP — What Is the Difference?

FTTC — Fibre to the Cabinet (Legacy)

Most businesses currently on ‘fibre broadband’ are actually on FTTC — fibre to the street cabinet, then copper wire to your premises. The final copper section limits your maximum speed and is part of the network being retired in the PSTN switch-off. If you are on FTTC, you will need to upgrade.

FTTP — Fibre to the Premises (Full Fibre)

FTTP delivers fibre all the way from the exchange directly to your premises — no copper in the final section. This gives significantly higher maximum speeds, more consistent performance, and future-proofs your connectivity beyond the PSTN switch-off. Where FTTP is available in Birmingham, we always recommend it over FTTC.

Business Broadband vs Consumer Broadband

Business broadband from Sentinel SecureTech is not the same product as a consumer broadband package with a business label. Our business packages include: Business-priority traffic routing — your traffic is prioritised over residential users Faster fault response SLAs — not the residential ‘best endeavours’ response Static IP address — required for hosted services, VPN, and remote access Dedicated account manager — one point of contact, not a call centre queue No fair usage policies — your bandwidth is your bandwidth

Our Business Broadband Services for Birmingham

FTTP Business Broadband — Birmingham & West Midlands

Where full fibre FTTP is available, we supply and manage FTTP business broadband with speeds up to 1Gbps for Birmingham and West Midlands businesses. Fast installation, static IP as standard, and a business-grade SLA covering fault response and uptime.

PSTN Migration & Voice Transition

The PSTN switch-off affects every business with a traditional phone line. We manage the full migration of your voice services to VoIP or hosted telephony — number porting, hardware assessment, and user testing — as part of your broadband upgrade project. No disruption to your phone service during the transition.

Bonded Broadband — Where FTTP Is Not Yet Available

In areas where FTTP is not yet available, bonded broadband combines multiple lines into a single, higher-speed connection with built-in resilience. If one line develops a fault, the remaining lines continue to carry traffic. A practical interim solution while full fibre rollout reaches your area.

Broadband with Failover

We recommend pairing every business broadband connection with a 4G or 5G failover solution. If your primary broadband develops a fault, failover activates automatically — no manual intervention, no outage visible to your team or customers.

Why Birmingham Businesses Choose Sentinel SecureTech for Business Broadband

We also provide dedicated leased linesSD-WAN, and managed IT services — so your broadband is managed alongside your wider IT environment by a single team that understands how all the pieces fit together.

Your Questions About Business Broadband in Birmingham — Answered

What is the PSTN switch-off and how does it affect my Birmingham business?

The PSTN switch-off is the retirement of the UK’s copper telephone network, scheduled for December 2027.

Any service running over the old copper network — including FTTC broadband, traditional phone lines, and some alarm and payment systems — will stop working after that date. Birmingham businesses need to migrate to full fibre broadband and VoIP telephony before the deadline. We provide free PSTN exposure assessments and manage the full migration.

FTTP is full fibre to your premises. FTTC uses fibre to the street cabinet, then copper to your building.

FTTC is the most common form of current ‘fibre broadband’ — but the final copper section limits speed and is being retired in the PSTN switch-off. FTTP delivers faster, more consistent speeds and is future-proof. Where FTTP is available in Birmingham, we always recommend it.

Business broadband and FTTP installations in Birmingham typically take 5 to 10 working days.

Where civils or additional infrastructure are required, timelines may extend. We manage the process end to end and keep you updated throughout. Leased line installations take longer — typically 20 to 40 working days.

Yes — most business applications require a static IP address.

A static IP is required for VPN remote access, hosted services, CCTV systems, and many cloud business applications. All our business broadband packages include a static IP address as standard — it is not an add-on.

It depends on your usage, team size, and tolerance for shared infrastructure.

Business broadband suits growing businesses with moderate internet usage and budgets that do not yet justify a leased line. A dedicated leased line is the right choice when your business depends on guaranteed speeds at all times — VoIP, cloud applications, video conferencing, or regular large uploads. We will recommend the right product after a free assessment.
